Zajedno sa prijateljima osnovao je Gesundheit! Institut (njem. gesundheit-nazdravlje) u Pocahontasu, West Virginia. U Institutu je integrirana tradicionalna s alternativnom medicinom - akupunktura, homeopatija itd. U bolnici rade volonteri iz cijelog svijeta, ima 40-tak kreveta, a usluge su besplatne. Pacijentima se prilazi holistički uz mnogo humora i vedrine, nastojeći povezati tjelesno i duhovno zdravlje. Institut se financira donacijama, te sredstvima od prodaje knjiga i videa. Dr. Adams aktivno putuje svijetom i promovira svoju filozofiju, u braku je s Lindom Edquist i imaju dvoje djece. Život Patcha Adamsa poslužio je kao predložak za istoimeni film s Robin Williamsom u glavnoj ulozi.

Hunter (Patch) Adams rođen je 1945.g. u Washingtonu i nakon što je doživio osobnu traumu odlučio je studirati medicinu, te diplomirao 1971.g. na sveučilištu u Virginiji. Njegov način liječenja razlikovao se od uobičajenog. Uvjeren da je smjeh najjači lijek, završio je tečaj u cirkusu i postao klaun Patch. Pacijente je prvenstveno uveseljavao, nasmijavao i hrabrio.
