ddr Oko 9000 sportaša u bivšem DDR-u je od 1972. do 1989. uzimalo nedozvoljena stimulativna sredstva. U tom razdoblju istočnonjemački sportaši su osvojili 384 olimpijske medalje. Ovi podaci su izazvali zgražanje u sportskoj javnosti, posebice nakon što su petorica atletskih trenera Klaus Baarck, Gerhard Böttcher, Rainer Pottel, Maria Ritschel i Klaus Schneider potpisali priznanje kako su svojim sportašima davali dopinška sredstva.

"Znali smo da kršimo sportske propise, no tada smo svi mislili kako činimo dobru stvar. To je od nas tražio državni vrh," kazao je Baarck, koji će, kao i njegovi kolege, zadržati posao u Njemačkom atletskom savezu jer su priznali nečasne radnje. Njemački olimpijski odbor je potvrdio kako su spomenuta petorka i njihovi najbliži suradnici od 1991. godine "čisti" i nemaju nikakve veze s dopinškim sredstvima. Prema njihovim izjavama, dio sportaša nije bio upoznat s 'politikom dopingiranja', dok je dio sportaša svjesno pristao na uzimanje nedozvoljenih sredstava.

Dopingiranje se vršilo pod nadzorom ministarstva i tajne službe STASI, a u cijelom projektu sudjelovalo je i stotinjak stručnjaka iz raznih područja. Glavni tvorci dopinškog programa bili su plivački trener Manfred Evald i medicinski direktor reprezentacije Manfred Höppner, koji su 2000. godine osuđeni na uvjetne kazne. Njemačkim ujedinjenjem projekt je završio, no počele su brojne zdravstvene tegobe sportaša u vidu raznih oblika tumora i druge.
