Riječ je o planinskom, teško pristupačnu području Abruzza, a vlasti su zatvorile i autocestu, ne samo zato da omoguće bržu dostavu pomoći, nego i zbog straha da se ne uruše brojni tuneli kroz koje prolazi autocesta. Zasad se još ne zna u kojoj je mjeri potres potkopao cestovne tunele. Hrvatski Crveni križ je pokrenuo prikupljanje pomoći za stanovništvo središnje Italije stradalo u potresu koji je u ranim jutarnjim satima 6. travnja pogodio grad Aquilu. Oko 100.000 ljudi ostalo je bez krova nad glavom u potresu u ponedjeljak 6.4.2009. u L'Aquile, planinskom mjestu oko 100 kilometara istočno od Rima. Nakon najsnažnijeg potresa u 3.30 sati u noći zabilježena su još dva jača potresa magnitude 4,6 i 3,5 Richtera ujutro i prijepodne. U potresu magnitude 5,8 po Richterovoj ljestvici poginulo je više stotina ljudi, a mnogo je ozlijeđenih i nestalih.
