Skrb za osobe s duševnim smetnjama u Hrvatskoj ima 130-godišnju tradiciju, jer je još 1880. godine naredbom Kraljevske zemaljske vlade usvojen Statut kraljevskog Zemaljskog zavoda za umobolne u Stenjevcu, kako se tada zvala Klinika za psihijatriju Vrapče. 2010. godine je registrirano 41144 hospitalizacija zbog mentalnih poremećaja, što je na sedmom mjestu u ukupnom bolničkom pobolu, a najviše hospitaliziranih je u dobi od 20 do 59 godina. |
Hrvatski sabor je 6. lipnja proglasio Danom prava osoba s duševnim smetnjama, a odluku o proglašenju predložio je Odbor za zdravstvo i socijalnu skrb, ističući u obrazloženju da se time Hrvatska svrstava u zemlje koje prednjače u zaštiti prava osoba s duševnim smetnjama. Obilježavanje dana posvećenog pravima osoba s duševnim smetnjama, stoji u odluci, opravdano je s obzirom na njihovu nedvojbeno specifičnu poziciju u svim društvima i svim vremenima.
